Six years after construction began, Moscow Vnukovo Airport has fully opened its new 270,000sqm Terminal A, doubling the gateway’s capacity to 30 million passengers per annum.
The completed $1.4 billion (44 billion rubles) facility was opened on December 18 at a ceremony attended by senior Russian government figures, including presidential chief of staff Sergei Ivanov, transportation minister Maxim Sokolov and Mayor Sergei Sobyanain.
As a result of the second phase of development, the terminal area has increased by 96,000sqm to a total of 270,000sqm.
The terminal has 52 gates, 31 of which are equipped with boarding bridges, with three new aprons capable of accommodating Boeing 747 aircraft, and one able to accommodate the Airbus A380.
Terminal A was partially opened in July 2010, but it was finally put into full operation at the end of last year.
Ivanov, who was the deputy prime minister overseeing the transportation sector when the project began in 2006, told local journalists that the terminal cost 44 billion rubles ($1.4 billion) to complete, but he said only 400 million rubles had come from the federal budget.
