Until 02/13/2013 I was unaware of FR24. I received the WEB address in an e-mail, and when I viewed the display on my PC I was amazed! I am a retired Air Traffic Controller, Atlanta, GA USA, Atlanta Tower ARTS Data Systems Specialist, and Memphis, TN USA Data Systems Officer. Ive been out of the activities for more than several years, and wondered what in the world is an ADS-B ? Much research in the last few days has shown me the Future of Airborne Traffic for the coming years.
I have seen Air Traffic Control grow from Radar Blips, to Transponders, into the Digital Age, and now into the stages of Airborne Collision Avoidance. But the fascinating thing is the spinoff, where Ground Stations, able to receive these transmissions every second from the aircraft, can relay this lat/long position, the altitude, speed, and direction of the flight to a location somewhere (like in Stockholm) and have it displayed without having to track it with some sophisticated piece of software.
I sat at my PC in Georgia USA at 10 pm (nighttime), using FR24, I viewed a Malaysia flight land at the Sydney Australia Airport at 2 pm (daytime) local time, watched this aircraft roll out on the runway, taxi to the terminal, and into his parking spot. This was not possible to do when I was working.
