RTL1090 has a major problem

$

RTL1090 feeding to fr24 has a huge problem, it either submits a bad hex or reads it incorrectly and sends it to fr24. it also keeps the site from displaying the correct callsign/type/origin-destination everything as if everything was stripped. i was able to replicate this using rtl1090 and fr24feed from windows when i first started feeding with it and i stopped because i wasn't able to see anything useful, and have since moved to feeding with dump1090/rpi without any issues. at certain times of the day, it seems to update to fr24 so frequently it would override every other reliable feed in the area and show a screen full of "Unknown" aircraft. (yes i know how fr24 chooses to display which feed is coming from). rtl1090 also chooses to display low flying general aviation aircraft as well, whereas dump1090/FR24 equipment ignores the low altitude general aviation aircraft.

here are some screens to show what i mean. the KSFO bay area is of most interest to me so this is what the screen is looking at.

hate to be complaining here, but a screen full of "Unknown" is not very fun to look at.

Plane circling low over London

This morning a small plane was doing circles quite low (less than 100m or so) over the Earl's Court part of London between 9.00 and 9.30. I was curious, and checked the playback on flightradar. There's a flight, callsign STL21, registration G-OCFM, that was flying around like mad. Photos from google match the kind of plane I saw. It didn't go near that part of London on the playback, but it was intermittently on/off with the ADSB, so probably it's that plane. Anyone know what this plane does/who it belongs to? Was it doing photography?

I've always wanted to step inside into any of Qatar Airways' aircrafts to look around. Now got a chance to take a look around Airbus A380 new first class and business class cabin, the inflight bar and bathrooms, as Qatar's A380 will begin its first flights in October.

FCK211 - Calibration Flight

by chance, I came across this flight:

FCK211 from THU sep.25 23:12 CEST to FRI sep.26 00:53 CEST
http://www.flightradar24.com/FCK211/46bab13

the flight path looks pretty weird - two large, perfect circles and some erratic patterns in between ...

I wonder what is the purpose of such flights, what is being calibrated?

Stunning photos of the Belgian Air Force Days

The air show was particularly interesting, as it featured not only the usual solo display of several aircraft types, including the Dassault Rafale and the Mig-29, but also a tactical event whose aim was to provide the spectators a better insight on the how the Belgian Air Force is integrated in a NATO operation: the BAF set up a fictional scenario based on the current PSO (Peace Support Operations) in Afghanistan, within which 10 F-16 jets, supported by A-109 and Mi-24 helicopters, B-Hunter UAV (from 80th UAV squadron of the BAF) and NATO E-3A AWACS demonstrated some of their capabilities to the public.

What to Do if your ISPs Modem Quits and Can't Get the Status Page to Load

This happened to me and I was offline until the ISP technicians arrived and changed the modem.

If the IP numbering scheme is different in the new modem like 192.168.xxx.xxx verses 192.168.1.xxx you can change it to any scheme the old modem had in the new modem advanced settings or options where you can change the starting IP.

While your are in the options, look for NPnP to see if it is enabled....most of the time it is not but is needed if you wish to collaborate with you FR24 neighbors with Virtual Radar Server,

Some people used a networked computer binding the ethernet port and wireless port for attaching the FR24 receiver allowing it access to the internet as long as it is that networked computer is on 24/7.

Other folks use the recommended method of connecting the FR24 receiver via ethernet cable directly to the modem. Connecting directly this way eliminates the roadblock of killing the path to the internet when the computer is off.

I have used both methods and prefer connecting directly to the modem.

In the modem advanced settings there is also an option to associate an IP to a MAC address. The MAC address is found on the Status page if you are able to get it to load or the label on the bottom of the FR24 receiver. It is also found on the status page and there is a place for a checkmark if you want to force a static address. If that is unchecked the FR24 receiver will be randomly reassigned an IP whenever the power to the modem is cycled either intentionally or unintentionally and then you will have to chase down the correct address to the Status page. An alternative is login to your premium account and select Your Account, click More Info and on the next page More Info again.

Some ISPs dumb down the available options on the modem you can change....you overcome this with a special username and password. Google it. Github is where i found mine.

When catastrophe strikes there are ways to recover.

Beginner's question re: 3D view, real or not real?

I've just downloaded the app today. Regarding the 3D view, is it really the view from the cockpit, as in there is a camera in the cockpit, or is it a simulated view taken from Google Earth?

The AIR14 was concluded with 24 F-5 Tigers of the Swiss Air Force forming the number “100” in Payerne’s sky. Almost 400’000 people helped make the air show a great success, celebrating 100 years of Swiss military aviation, 50 years of Patrouille Suisse and 25 years of PC-7 TEAM. Check out few great photos from AIR14.
